But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ is not raised, then our preaching is without foundation, and so is your faith – 1 Corinthians 15:13-14
We live in what is being called the age of science and reason. Many people believe that science and logic have all the answers we could ever possibly need and the only “mysteries” out there are simply undiscovered scientific facts. They believe it’s just a matter of time until all the unknowns of the universe will soon be figured out and then we will all be happy and live long happy lives with every answer to every question. They say, this will be the end to religion, and even God Himself.
There are so many problems with this that it would take a much longer article to show all the fallacies of this thinking, but I would like to point out a few as it relates to Easter and our faith.
First, when you use science and logic only and nothing else to seek answers, it deadens the heart and soul of a person. That is not to say science and logic are bad or even unnecessary. On the contrary. But simply relying on them to find inspiration and wonder which sparks imagination and illumination cannot be found in them by themselves. There is an odd comfort in knowing that the world and all creation is so organizationally complex. For us, that means there is a Creator which formed all of these with a simple breath of words, and He is still watching over us today. This Creator is beyond comprehension and full knowledge and yet loved us so much He showed us that even death itself wasn’t too big for Him to conquer. We can trust Him.
Those who believe in only science and logic see no room for faith. This is ironic, because they too have faith, and their faith is in the very thing which they study and try to discover. They rely on intellect and theory to guide their lives and actions. This is so disconcerting at times for them that they will insist their theories are “facts” even though these “facts” change in some form or another year after year. But we have a fact which has never been proven false. Christ died and rose again and is the foundation of all which we do and say. Religion, as they put it, is foolish and for the weak-minded. Maybe they are right about religion in general. But Christ is not simply a religious figure we pay homage to on a certain day but rather He is a risen savior who defied the natural to do the supernatural so that our foundation of faith in Him would be steady and secure and that faith would not be in vain.
Following Him,
Jeff
