“There still remains a rest for the people of God.” Hebrews 4:9
Society today seems to measure the value or worth of a person, in part, by how busy they are. The busier someone is then they must be important, after all, they must be doing a lot of things, or a lot of people want them for one reason or another.
This is never more seen than in this time of year. There is so much going on, so many plans to make, so many responsibilities which all vie for our attention. Because we want to help others, and possibly want to be seen as someone of value, we fill up our time with many tasks and appointments.
However, the Bible tells us that rest is an important thing for all of us to have. When God created the world, He gave us an example and rested on the 7th day. When Jesus showed up at his friend’s house, one of them was busy running around, making sure that everything was just right. The other sat at the feet of Jesus and spent time with Him. Jesus praised her for choosing what was more important.
There must be a balance here. The Bible also says, if you don’t work, you don’t eat. It warns against slothfulness, and laziness as well. So, don’t take these words as an excuse not to fulfil the things God has given you to do for His glory.
But be mindful of what you fill your time with and make sure you are doing exactly what God wants you to do. Make sure you have those times of rest and rejuvenation, then get back to work. Not so others may praise you and you can show how important you are, but rather so that you can be a light to the world and point people to Jesus.
Following Him,
Jeff
